How New Mums can Sleep Better

How New Mums can Sleep Better

The months after your little one arrives are some of the most disruptive, you’ll ever experience! Postpartum insomnia is a common issue for new mums who are recovering from giving birth, dealing with chaotic hormones, and of course, trying to get use to having a new born at home. Here are some tips to help you get the sleep you need to take on each day, the energy to enjoy the journey and find balance in your new life.

Tip #1 – Chat to your doctor

Being tired and a bit stressed is normal for any new mum, but it’s easy to push all your needs aside to focus solely on your new born. The problem is that if you aren’t feeling rested and well, then you’re going to struggle to meet your bub’s needs. The better you take care of yourself, the better you take care of them! Doctors can help determine if your insomnia is normal or at a higher level than expected and can help you treat it safely and effectively. They can also help determine if it is a symptom of another health condition, helping you get early treatment and back on your feet as soon as possible.

Tip #2 – Exercise gently and regularly

Exercising is a bit easier said than done, but the rewards for new mums are worth the extra effort! Remember, you’re not trying to exercise at your pre-pregnancy levels – just gentle exercise every day like walking around the neighbourhood, swimming, or very light yoga is enough to get you the benefits. This is because exercise causes the brain to release dopamine and serotonin (happy hormones) while reducing cortisol (the stress hormone), helping to reduce anxiety and stress that can contribute to sleeplessness.

Tip #3 – Develop a sleep routine

A sleep routine won’t work every night but it will help you get better quality sleep more often, and it’s great for your bub too! A routine is all about training your brain to relax and go to sleep, so you want to choose things that make you and your little one nod off. Things like a warm bath, soft lighting, meditating, or listening to soothing music are a good help. You can also give your bub a baby massage to soothe their nervous system, release tension, and aid digestion. It’s best to use a massage lotion made for sensitive skin enriched with pure essential oils, as this will nourish and protect their skin while sending them off to sleep. The better your bub sleeps, the better you will too!
