#5 Common Triggers for Skin Sensitivity in Bubs
For parents, the well-being of your little one is everything! So, when their skin suddenly breaks out in a rash, redness, or irritation, it’s especially concerning. Here are some of the most common reasons why sensitivity can suddenly occur, and what to do about it.
#1 – Sunscreen
The Aussie sun is especially harsh on sensitive skin, and that means sunscreen is a staple product for our bubs. However, some of the chemicals in the sunscreen can be a problem too. For babies over 6 months, look for products that are free of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), that are broad-spectrum to cover UVA and UVB, and have zinc oxide in them. Help keep your little one dry as well as cool on hot, sunny days, as the extra sweat can cause skin irritation too.
#2 – Antibacterial soaps
Antibacterial soaps have been noted by the FDA as a possible source of skin irritation in children with sensitive skin. Fortunately, alcohol and fragrance-free sanitisers, washes, and skincare are just as effective as removing germs and dirt from skin, toys, fruits and veggies, so it’s a good idea to swap out antibacterial soaps for natural, organic alternatives with proven effectiveness.
#3 – Fragranced moisturisers
For most people, fragranced moisturisers aren’t a problem – but they can be a trigger for anyone with sensitive skin, especially babies. If you’re seeing redness, dry and flaky patches, or signs of eczema on your bub’s skin, the moisturiser may be the problem. Swap it out with a certified organic moisturiser that is fragrance-free and uses organic, natural oils that soothe and soften the skin. This will help prevent pain and irritation and help stop future flare-ups. And you get to enjoy that all-natural baby scent!
#4 – Insect repellent
Bugs can be a real pest through the summer months and bubs need plenty of protection from mosquitoes, flies and other insects. Unfortunately, many insect repellents have strong chemical ingredients that can trigger rashes on sensitive skin, as well as pain and irritation to the sensitive mucous membranes in your bub’s nose. To prevent bites and keep bugs far away, it’s best to use an organic insect repellent that is as gentle as it is effective. Look for products that are Australian Certified Organic for your peace of mind, that use citronella, lavender, lemon myrtle, and peppermint essential oils to naturally repel insects and aloe extract to moisturise and protect the skin.
#5 – Laundry detergent
Chemicals in laundry detergent aren’t fully washed out during the laundry cycle, and they’re a common cause of contact dermatitis in children as well as adults. This is much more common in bubs that have sensitive skin or skin conditions like eczema. To help prevent this issue, use a mild laundry liquid, contains no harsh chemicals, and uses the cleaning power of gentle, natural ingredients. This also helps to naturally soften clothing and linens so that they are even more gentle on sensitive skin.
