Plastic-Free Living Tips for New Parents

We all know by now that plastic is just no good for the planet, but how can you start going plastic-free when you’re a new parent? After all, you have a lot on your plate right now! Here are some tips from our organic baby care team.

#1 – Remind yourself why it matters to you

Going plastic-free is a big challenge, especially when you have a family, so it’s important to remember why you’re doing this. Here are some statistics and facts on plastic that can help you stay on track:

  • Every year, the average Aussie uses 130kg of plastic, of which only 12% is recycled
  • Studies are showing that plastic is in the food chain, so it’s now part of what we eat
  • It’s incredibly damaging to wildlife, especially our marine species like fish, whales, turtles and dolphins, killing around 1 million sea creatures each year
  • It takes over 450 years for a plastic bottle to break down in the ground, turning into microplastics that become part of the food chain
  • Plastic accounts for 60-95% of the debris found in oceans
  • Nearly every single piece of plastic ever made still exists today!

#2 – Get your family and loved ones involved

It takes a village to raise a baby – and the same applies to living plastic-free! Tell your friends and family about why you’re making this change and ask them to help. This can be as simple as them choosing eco-friendly non-plastic gifts for you and your bub, helping you find plastic-free alternatives you can use in everyday life, or even joining you in sharing your cause.

#3 – Don’t give up the plastic you have

It sounds counterintuitive, but don’t throw out all the plastic you have and start over with eco-friendly alternatives. This may feel good, but the reality is that that plastic will end up in landfills or in the oceans, which is what you’re trying to avoid. Because plastic is so versatile and so long-lasting, rather keep on using it as this keeps it out of the environment. Recycle what you can and take care of useful items like storage containers, bottles, and food containers, so you can reuse them for your entire lifetime.

#4 – Research brands that share your values

The world is becoming more eco-conscious, and many businesses are out there trying to bring green options to their consumers. It may take a little time and research, but there are some fantastic alternatives out there, especially in the home cleaning, skincare, and baby care product lines. Look for brands that use eco-friendly packaging and recycled product, and who go the extra mile to make sure their products are biodegradable, sustainable, and organic.
